Two weeks ago, I learned not to underestimate small ski areas. Together with the children, we went to Hoch-Ybrig (Schwyz, Switzerland) for the first time and for a start everything seemed very promising. The car drive there from Zurich Enge takes only 45 minutes, of which the first half goes on a highway and the second half on relatively broad country roads without any sharp curves. On top of that, on the day of our trip the driving conditions were perfect.
At the bottom of the cabin lift from Weglosen we could park the car for free, but when we reached the top at Klein Sternen (1 865 m) we had a negative surprise: thick fog! We still did our best to get a bit of skiing, but to understand how the slope went, I - who went first– quite literally could often only barely discern the very next orange verge post. I had great difficulties to compensate for even the smallest bumps in the snow and was rapidly completely dizzy.
Fortunately, in the afternoon the skies cleared up, which gave us the opportunity to finally explore the lift system and it was a very pleasant experience, although it consists of just a dozen ski lifts. Here we found exactly that mix of blue and red slopes that our nine- and eleven-year-old sons appreciate, so in the end we had a really good time.
Personally, I got an extra bonus since Switzerland’s future Alpine stars happens to practice at Hoch-Ybrig. Never before have I seen so many role models around me and possibly I have even started to understand what carving is all about. That was about time! ;)
